Birkin or Kelly: Which Hermès Bag Should You Choose?

It is the question we hear most often at 19 rue de Marignan: “Birkin or Kelly?” The two Hermès icons share the same leathers, the same saddle-stitch savoir-faire and the same aura — but they do not tell the same story, and they do not live the same way day to day. Here is how our advisors settle the debate.

Two icons, two histories

The Kelly is the elder. Born in the 1930s as the “sac à dépêches”, it entered legend in 1956 when Grace Kelly, Princess of Monaco, used it to shield herself from photographers. Hermès later renamed it in her honour.

The Birkin was born in 1984 from a chance encounter on a Paris–London flight between Jane Birkin and Jean-Louis Dumas, then president of Hermès. She dreamed of a bag both elegant and truly practical; he designed it for her.

Style: structure versus ease

The Kelly is architectural: a single handle, a flap, a removable shoulder strap. It is the more formal of the two — precise, almost jewel-like. It comes in two constructions: Sellier, with sharp edges and a strict silhouette, and Retourné, softer and more relaxed.

The Birkin embraces a more relaxed elegance: two handles, no strap, a generous silhouette. It is luxury worn naturally — on the arm or in the crook of the elbow.

Everyday life: practicality

• The opening. The Birkin is happy to stay half-open: everything is within reach. The Kelly closes with its flap and turn-lock — a more ceremonious ritual.
• The carry. The Kelly, in 25 or 28, works on the shoulder or crossbody. The Birkin is a hand and elbow bag.
• Capacity. Size for size it is comparable — the Birkin simply gives freer access to its interior.

Sizes and leathers

As for materials, the great classics: Epsom (fine grain, impeccable structure), Togo and Taurillon Clémence (supple, grained, resilient), Swift (smooth, deep colours), Box (the vintage spirit) — not forgetting exotic skins for exceptional pieces.

Price and value: what the market says

In Hermès boutiques, both models remain notoriously hard to obtain. On the secondary market they trade above retail and count among the very few fashion objects that hold their value remarkably well over time. The smaller sizes (25, 28) and timeless colours — Noir, Etoupe, Gold — are the most sought after; rare editions and exotic leathers reach record heights at auction.
